Children and AI – what parents should know
Talking characters and storytelling apps: artificial intelligence has reached products for young children. What UNICEF and the EU say, and what you can check yourself.
AI Teki: Teki talks back
In Teki Plus and Teki Family, Teki the turtle can also talk with your child, with the help of artificial intelligence. It stays off until you switch it on.
What your child does with AI Teki
Finish a story together, count together, or chat in a Teki call about topics made for children: animals, colours, seasons or stories.
At the start of the first conversation, Teki tells your child that it is a play character that a computer helps to talk.
You decide
- AI Teki is off by default. Only you can switch it on, for each child, behind the parent PIN.
- The microphone has its own switch. Without it, your child answers by tapping pictures.
- You set the daily limit.
- You can switch AI Teki, the microphone or Teki calls off at any time.
When a grown-up is needed
If your child says something that suggests they are hurt, scared or in trouble, Teki gives no advice. It asks your child to tell a grown-up, pauses the conversation and lets the family's adults know in the app. The message never contains your child's words.
How much AI Teki you get
- Teki Plus: 5 hours a month for the family.
- Teki Family: 8 hours a month for the family.
- During the 7 free days: 60 minutes for the family.
What happens to your child's words
The microphone listens only while your child holds the talk button, or while a Teki call you allowed is open on the screen. We never store their voice; their words go as text to a language model in the United States so Teki can reply, and are never used for training.
